‘When the band started in ’75 nobody imagined that 40 odd years later we would still be touring the world.’

Formed in Essex in 1975, The Rods are still led by original singer Barrie Masters – often confused as ‘Eddie’ who was in fact the bands mascot during their early years. Their live shows became the thing of legend, as documented on the ‘live at the Marquee’ ep in ’76. The Rods were one of the first bands to be described by the music press as ‘punk’ and in ’77, with the addition of Graeme Douglas on guitar and songwriting, they hit the UK top 10 with the anthemic ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do.’

The original band of Masters, Douglas, bassist Paul Gray, guitarist Dave Higgs and drummer Steve Nicol released 3 full length albums. Paul Gray left the band and joined The Damned in 1980. With Tony Cranney taking over bass duties the Rods released Fish N Chips for EMI in 1980, but by the end of 1981 the band was over.

The 80s and 90s saw a few different revived line ups of the Rods both on stage and in the studio, but it was in 2001 that the line up of Barrie Masters along with Simon Bowley (drums), Dipster Dean (bass) and Gary Loker (guitar) joined with John Otway guitarist Richard Holgarth. Following Loker’s departure Chris Taylor joined on guitar in preparation for the band’s 30th Anniversary album ‘Been There Done That’ in 2006. The current line up has enjoyed 17 years touring the world over, introducing new material into their set pleasing old fans and finding new along the way.

Rods new and old joined forces in 2014 to pay tribute to guitarist Dave Higgs who passed away in 2013. The 40th anniversary of the Rods in 2015 saw the ‘classic’ lineup of Gray, Douglas and Nicol join Masters for 2 special shows in Essex and London with Holgarth contributing in place of Dave Higgs.

In early 2018 the band announced it would be their last year of touring. Join us as Rods past & present and a host of special guests celebrate Eddie & The Hot Rods in a one off evening not to be missed.

Former venue boss and current touring bass player, trying the venue thing again with a bit of radio and gig DJing to drown out my headache.
