Eli “Paperboy” Reed back in the UK this June

Black Wax are excited to be working with US soul star Eli “Paperboy” Reed on two exclusive UK club shows.

Eli makes a long-awaited return to the UK and will be hitting Glasgow and Manchester on the 13th and 14th of June.

Eli “Paperboy” Reed is a survivor. He was one of the first of the new wave of singers and songwriters to embrace unabashedly soulful music and he has been tearing up stages all over the world with his heart-stopping falsetto screams for more than a decade with no plans to slow down.

From humble musical beginnings growing up outside of Boston, at 18 Reed moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi and cut his teeth playing and singing in juke joints all over the Delta. From there he took the well-trod path to Chicago where he spent a year as minister of music the Southside church of Soul legend Mitty Collier.

Now approaching the 15-year mark in his career and finishing up his 8th album, Reed has improbably become an elder statesman of the genre, and he’s begun seeing new artists who are taking inspiration from his unique sound. A sound that, over everything else, prizes feeling, energy, and, yes, Soul.

For these full-band club shows, support will come from London’s Danny Toeman.

A dynamic performer with a powerful and evocative voice, Danny Toeman has earned his reputation as a Soul Funk Visionary (The Evening Standard); supporting artists including Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, and Kool & the Gang, performing at many of the UK’s most famous venues, and having his releases played BBC Radio 2, 6 Music, and other national radio broadcasters across Europe.

The Big Easter Weekend!

Black Wax have teamed up with Redchurch Brewery, John Mann and The Spirit of The Square to present a full long weekend of live entertainment.

Thursday 6th April
Comedy night with Clinton Baptiste, Louie Green and Aideen McQueen, hosted by John Mann.

We’re over the moon that paranormal sensation Clinton Baptiste will be taking us on a hilarious yet touching journey through his life, out the other side and beyond the Celestial Curtains.

Clinton Baptiste is the hapless clairvoyant, medium and psychic from Peter Kay’s smash hit Channel 4 TV show Phoenix Nights.

Clinton will give readings to the audience, offering advice from beyond the grave. He will predict your future, tell you about your past and all manner of spooky stuff an’ that.

“Hundreds of years ago when a man walked the planet he had no real means of communication. In time man developed phenomena which has never been fully understood by the psychic community. This phenomena is… Clinton Baptiste” – Peter Kay

Friday 7th April (Good Friday)
Live music with The Small Fakers (Small Faces tribute) and guests

Firm favourites with Harlow’s mod and 60s fans, the Small Fakers first played in Harlow at The Square in 2008, and have played in town at least once every year since, except 2022.

So we’re putting that right and bringing them to perform in the heart of the brewery for a very good Friday.

Tickets

Saturday 8th April
Live music with Don’t Worry, The Bonnevilles + Fell and The Fallen

Local band Don’t Worry play their first full band hometown show since 2019. That last performance was part of The Square’s summer reunion event at Harlow Rugby club where they headlined the indoor stage. Having released their 2nd album Remorseless Swing in 2022, supported by a UK tour and airplay from Steve Lamacq on BBC 6music, we’re pleased to be hosting them back in Harlow.

They’ll be joined by Northern Irelands finest exports of garage punk blues – The Bonnevilles!

A last min opportunity to host them on their UK tour couldn’t be passed up so you’ve now got two headliners for the price of one!

Black Wax Live! Show 16

What a show! It has been an absolute honour to host the king of power pop – Paul Collins!

Black Wax wouldn’t be Black Wax without something going wrong, but luckily it was with me in the studio. Listen to the show and all will be clear.

As for the live set, it was perfection! The reason for the delay with getting the show uploaded is that I wanted to do the performance justice so Sam the sound man took the audio away to mix it properly, and it sounds great!

We also had brand new songs from Radiohearts and Duncan Reid & The Big Heads, as well as some classic power pop. Enjoy!
